Assessment Title

Rule Text

The at.allow file must be group-owned by root, sys, bin or other.

Description

Discussion Text

If the group-owner of the at.allow file is not set to root, sys, bin or other, unauthorized users could be allowed to view or edit the list of users permitted to run at jobs. Unauthorized modification could result in Denial of Service to authorized at users or provide unauthorized users with the ability to run at jobs.

Syntax-checked and actually executed in an isolated sandbox (not the real system this checks) — confirmed to run without errors.

#!/bin/sh
# OVAL Definition: oval:mil.disa.fso.hpux11:def:196
if [ ! -f "/usr/lib/cron/at.allow" ]; then echo "PASS"; exit 0; fi
if [ -g "/usr/lib/cron/at.allow" ] && [ $(stat -c "%G" "/usr/lib/cron/at.allow") = "0" ] || [ $(stat -c "%G" "/usr/lib/cron/at.allow") = "$(grep -oE 'sys:[^:]*:[0-9]+' /etc/group | cut -d':' -f3)" ] || [ $(stat -c "%G" "/usr/lib/cron/at.allow") = "$(grep -oE 'bin:[^:]]*:[0-9]+' /etc/group | cut -d':' -f3)" ]; then echo "PASS"; exit 0; fi
echo "FAIL"; exit 1

Remediation

Change the group ownership of the file.
# chgrp root /usr/lib/cron/at.allow
