Assessment Title

Rule Text

The system allows shutdown from the logon dialog box.

Description

Discussion Text

Preventing display of the shutdown button in the logon dialog box may encourage a hard shut down with the power button. (However, displaying the shutdown button may allow individuals to shut down a system anonymously.)

How this relates to the STIG checklist: STIG vs SCAP benchmark.

Assessment Script Powered by AISyntax-verified

A standalone PowerShell script to assess this control automatically. Review before running it in your environment.

Syntax-checked as valid PowerShell. Not executed here — running it for real needs the actual windows_7 target this check assesses.

# OVAL Definition: oval:mil.disa.fso.windows:def:3721
$shutdownSetting = Get-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System' -Name 'ShutdownWithoutLogon' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
if ($shutdownSetting -and $shutdownSetting.ShutdownWithoutLogon -eq 1) { Write-Output "PASS"; Exit 0 } else { Write-Output "FAIL"; Exit 1 }

Remediation

Configure the policy value for Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options -> “Shutdown: Allow system to be shutdown without having to log on” to “Enabled”.
